The main mistake I see from some gym goers is coming in to do a session without having a program. In my opinion everyone should be on some form of training program where they can track progress on something set out towards achieving what they want to achieve. I am not saying that if you don’t have a set program you won’t achieve your goals or that every so often coming in and doing off the cuff sessions is going to harm your progress but in my experience having a pre planned route to your goal is going to get your there quicker!
Specificity is key in training so for example if you are training to get stronger, bigger, leaner or become better at a sport or event you need to make sure your training is geared towards that.
For example there is no point if a rugby player is training like a cyclist. That’s not to say that there aren’t transferable aspects of fitness for both of these sports but in terms of performing at your best then training specific to rugby is going to be the route you need to go down!
If you are coming in and training and stuck doing the same things each session then why not speak to a Personal Trainer and see if they can help set some goals with you and kick start your training for the new year!
